Fact sheet: Implementation And Management

Background

In June 2002, the IM/IT Joint Table completed its work on identifying ways of building the capacity of the sector through the application of Information Management/ Information Technology. The Joint Table submitted a report with program recommendations to the Minister of Industry and to the VSI Joint Coordinating Committee. The IM/IT Secretariat at Industry Canada has been tasked, along with sector representatives, to implement this program.

Work of the IM/IT Joint Table

The Joint Table examined previous studies and reports on the needs of the sector, as well as conducted its own needs analysis study in 2001. It also set up working groups to examine issues and solutions.

The Joint Table prepared a report that includes research findings and a five-component strategy:

  • Campaign focussed on funders
  • Access to IT planning, hardware and software, training and technical support
  • Voluntary sector portal
  • Funding exchange
  • Technology awareness campaign.
Expected Roles and Responsibilities in Implementation

Industry Canada will consult broadly on implementing the IM/IT Joint Table strategy. The IM/IT Secretariat, which will report to the Minister of Industry, will work with the various components of the VSI to ensure that the proposed tools and services complement the overall objectives of this important initiative.

The Secretariat will also work with an advisory group of voluntary sector representatives to deliver this strategy. Voluntary sector members will also have an opportunity to sit on several implementation teams, which will be selected through a competitive process.

After implementation, the voluntary sector will be responsible for the management of the initiatives. It is anticipated that the IM/IT Secretariat will close in March 2005.
